City and country you live in? (if you're comfortable sharing this - you don't need to.) Inverness, FL 6. Do you have a blog or website link that you want to share with everyone? http://inblindschool.blogspot.com/ Thanks for participating in the roll-call! :) Also, what verses or insights stand out to you in today's readings? God created everything in the world, without God we would be nothing.
I understand how Genesis 1 tells the story of creation and how Matthew 1 tells how Jesus's family tree fits in to the story of creation, the things that I do not understand is how Psalm 1 and Proverb 1 fit in to the story of creation. Can anyone help clarify this for me?
5 And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
6 And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. I wonder how GOD feels about man today? Even when we are being tempted GOD is still there guiding and protecting our lives, just as he was with JESUS while HE was on Earth with us.
GOD's grace allowed Noah to repopulate the Earth after the flood, he could of just as easily left Noah and the animals in his care to die. I will never look the same way at a rainbow EVER again. The Canaananites came from Ham.
"Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." I am being brutally honest with myself if I had been one of the first deciples I do not know if I could have left everything that I knew to follow JESUS, I am ashamed to admit this but I am being honest with myself.
I do not know if I could have left everything I knew to move to a strange new land. Do you think the Eygptians would have killed Abram if he had said that he and Sari were married, I do not think that they would have. I love the Beatitudes it is my LIFE LONG goal to be able to live up to them.
I say an opening prayer, read Scripture, read my churches prayer list, my daily devotional then end with thanking GOD.
A major source for the problems in the Middle East today is the disputed land of the region. "For all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever."
In Genesis I have a basic problem with how people treated other people, it seems so inhumane to me to think that people actually thought that this was an acceptable practice. I love the Beatitudes. "For where your treasure is there will your heart be also."
I start praying a prayer that I have used since childhood, I pray for my family on a nightly basis, it varies what other people I pray for each night: service personel and there families, politicians, ministers to lead GOD's flock effectively and world peace. I have now added that I hope my congregation will be successfull in reading GOD's WORD in a year. http://www.fpcinv.org I drift off to sleep trying to memorize a short verse of Scripture each day.
In Genesis God spared the righteous (Lot and his family) before destroying the wicked, this shows that God is a merciful and just God. In Matthew Jesus tells us not to worry He will previde for us what we need to live. "Judge not, that ye be not judged." This seems pretty self explanatory to me.
I do not think that I could have done what Abraham did and sacrifice my own child, not even for God, even though this is EXACTLY what GOD did when he sent JESUS to be our sacrificial LAMB. "And in thy seed all of the nations of the Earth shall be blessed because thou has obeyed my voice."
I love the verses about the wise and foolish builders, one built a house on sand while the other built his house on rocks, when the rains came the house on rocks went SPLAT and the house came tumbling down.
I have NO set time for my quiet time, I tried having a set time for a few weeks but my life is so busy that I was unable to stick to a set time so now I just do my Devotions and have quiet time whenever I have a spare hour to myself. I say an opening prayer, asking GOD for guidance and understanding, say Psalm 1 from memory, ask God to bless this reading of his Holy Word. I read Scripture, OT, NT, Psalms and Proverbs, read a page from the Daily Devotional that I recieved for Christmas, read my churches prayer list, end with thanking GOD for helping me to grow in understanding and knowledge.
In the evening before I go to bed I start praying a prayer that I have used since childhood, I pray for my family on a nightly basis, it varies what other people I pray for each night: service personel and there families, politicians, ministers to lead GOD's flock effectively and world peace. I have now added that I hope my congregation will be successfull in reading GOD's WORD in a year. I drift off to sleep trying to memorize a short verse of Scripture each day.
I attend church on a weekly basis. I belong to a women's Bible study group in my church, we are currently studying Joshua. http://www.fpcinv.org
All you have to do is Believe and Jesus WILL heal you of your illness.
I love the centurions faith to tell Jesus to just say the word and my servant will be healed.
17 The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God. For the needy shall not always be forgotten: the expectation of the poor shall not perish for ever.
God corrects those he loves to show them the error of there ways.
12 "And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it." I have always loved the immagery of the angels ascending and descending from Heaven to Earth.
17 "Leah was tender eyed; but Rachel was beautiful and well favoured."
Rebecca met Isaac's servant the same way Rachel met Jacob at a well watering the flocks.
In my opinion is was not right the way Leban tricked Jacob and gave one daughter when he had promised him the other one in marraige.
COMPASSION is the main theme of Jesus's ministry on Earth, HE was moved with compassion to do ALL of the wonderful things that HE did for others.
I like these verses in Psalms and Proverbs
7 "For the righteous LORD loveth righteousness; his countenance doth behold the upright."
11 "My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction:"
12 "For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth."
Hi Raeann. You've had a lot to say! I finally got logged in today. I find the whole life of Jacob to be unsettling. He did a lot of tricking and he also got tricked a lot. His son's are just as bad. It is hard to understand why everyone was so unscrupulous. The amazing thing is how God's will gets done in spite of man's sin. The new testament verses also gave me a lot to think about. We'll be judged by every careless word we speak. Makes you want to just keep your mouth shut. Finally, Psalm 16 was very comforting to me.
Hi again Raeann and anyone else who might be blogging. Today's scripture was refreshing. I'm happy to say that I like Joseph much more than his father or grandfather. Todays one year bible site has some great insights into the Word ( http://www.oneyearbibleblog.com/ ). I like the idea that God will bless the people who are around someone He loves. It makes me want to choose my friends wisely :)
The geneologies do get tedious, Raeann, especially when they go on and on. But they can hold little jewels of info in them. For instance, I hadn't realized until this year's readings that the Midians, who came from Abraham and his second wife, were also the ones who sold Joseph into slavery to the Egyptians. And aren't they the ones Moses married into? Also, I knew that the Canaanonites were looked down on by the Israelites but I didn't realize until this year that they were the descendents of Ham, the son of Noah who was cursed for seeing his father's nakedness. I guess that curse took.
If I had been given ALL that Joseph was given it would have gone to my head. At first it horrified me to read what Josephs brothers did to him in the fields, then I realized that if GOD using his brothers as his instruments had NOT sent Joseph to Eygpt then God would have had no way to save Israel from the forth coming famine. EVERYTHING GOD does has a purpose or reason.
11 "Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man."
I do NOT use profanity, I have NEVER understood what swearing adds to a conversation, in my opinion it just makes you sound ignorant, like you are unable to think of ANYTHING intelligent to say so you swear.

I do NOT use profanity, I have NEVER understood what swearing adds to a conversation, in my opinion it just makes you sound ignorant, like you are unable to think of ANYTHING intelligent to say so you swear.
When Israel blessed Judah was he refering to Christ in his blessing? The HALLMARK of Jesus ministry on Earth is COMPASSION for others. I AM a goal setter, I set goals and try to achieve them in my life.
It seems so barbaric that pharoah ordered the midwives to kill ALL of the Hebrew male children, just because Israel was becoming more populous then Eygpt. For I give you good doctrine, forsake ye not my law. I love the Transfiguration when Jesus becomes white as light.
My family moved around to much when I was little for me to attend church regularly, then I moved to MN and attended a wonderful church for highschool and college, the sanctuary was shaped like Noah's Ark. For the last several years I have been attending a Presbyterian church in FL that has a large contemporary service, I am an usher and help in the nursery on Sundays. I could not imagine NOT attending church every week.
The book of Genesis is about beginnings. The story of CREATION is so majestic and beautiful in how GOD created the ENTIRE world in only seven days. GOD made man in his own image. Adam brought SIN in to the world when he ate the FORBIDDEN fruit and was cast out of paradise. Caine committed the FIRST murder when he killed Able. GOD found Noah to be righteous in a CORRUPT world, he saved him and his family along with two of all animals from the flood that HE sent on the Earth to destroy ALL mankind. Abram LISTENED to GOD when GOD told him to go to an unknown land so that GOD could make Abram in to a GREAT nation and people of nations. GOD gave Abraham a son in his old age for being such a righteous person. Abraham was willing to KILL his own son Isaac when GOD told him to sacrifice him as an offering to GOD. Isaac and Jacob BOTH took wives from the children of Nabor Abraham's brother. Abraham and Isaac were both buried in the same field in Manre. Jacob stole Esue's birth right and blessing from Isaac. Isaac fled to Leban where he took both Leah and Rachel as his wives but he loved Rachel more then Leah. Jacob is given the name ISRAEL by GOD. Israel has twelve sons. Dinah is the first RAPE of the Bible. Israel loves Joseph the most out of his sons, his brothers sell him in to slavery in Eygpy. GOD uses Joseph to save ISRAEL from starvation in Egypt by providing them with food. The book of Genesis is not all good but it is also NOT all bad either, it is a mixed basket of the two like the rest of all of history. Why should the beginning be held to a higher standard then the rest of ALL time?
The Gospel of Matthew has some of the most familiar passages in the Bible. The first few chapter deal with Jesus's genealogy and birth. After John the Baptist anoints Jesus and tells the people that HE is the way. Jesus goes to the sea to start receiving his disciples. HE does numerous miracles from healing the sick, driving out demons, feeding the four thousand, people are drawn to HIM wherever HE goes in the land. HE walks on water and calms the storm. Many people believe in HIM, become HIS disciples and are saved. No one who met HIM could go away without having been changed. HE taught in parables and told HIS disciples there meanings. HE was transfigured and spoke with Moses and Elijah on the mountain. HE predicted HIS death more then once and tried to prepare HIS disciples for what was to come. HE went to Jerusalem even though HE knew that HE was going there to die. The people welcomed HIM with singing and praises one day and a week later HE was dead everyone having turned against HIM in the span of a single week. Praise God HE ascended on the third day to HEAVEN. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the Gospel of Matthew.
Good Morning to all, I have been reading the bible since the 6th of January and have run into a few problems with all the company we have had - so I'm running a little behind. Also, I'm reading the NIV and in Chronological order. Somehow, it's a little different reading it this way. After reading the first 11 chapters of Genesis then I switched over to Job. After Job then back to Genesis, so it does give a different perspective. I agree with Amy that Joesph was a much better man then his father or grandfather. I believe that he set a wonderful example for all of us to follow.
To introduce myself, I'm Barb and attend fpc in Inverness. My husband and I are snowbirds and I like the idea of the blog as it will help me to stay in contact with my church family while we are gone for the summer. In the summer we live in Hilton, NY just outside of Rochester. We have been very blessed to live only 3/4 of a mile from the shore of Lake Ontario. It is beautiful country.
Barb, How are you? I am fine. What service do you attend? I am an usher and attend the 8 am service, I work in the nersury. Do you belong to a PW Circle, I belong to Circle Deborah. See you at church, Raeann

ReplyDeleteAdam made us dead to sin Jesus makes us alive to life.
ReplyDeleteA basic unanswerable question is WHY did tne SERPENT tempt EVE?
5 And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
ReplyDelete6 And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.

There is NO cost to great in following Jesus.
ReplyDelete"And Abraham gave all that he had unto Isaac."
We ARE ALL sinners.
ReplyDelete12 "But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick."
"God be merciful to me a sinner." a personal favorite of mine.
God corrects those he loves to show them the error of there ways.

How was Jacob able to control what type of animal was born only using the reeds in the water?
ReplyDeleteJesus tries to prepare the TWELVE for what is to come when they go out in HIS name.
I LOVE the series of books called LEFT BEHIND by Tim Lahave, this series is about what happens at the end of the world during REVELATIONS.
"The LORD watch between me and thee, when we are absent one from another."
ReplyDeleteI read the BIBLE daily for inspiration and insight.
Jacob wrestled with GOD, in the morning recieved the name ISRAEL.
ReplyDeleteDinah is the first RAPE of the BIBLE.
"For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."
What is the POINT of ALL of these geneologies?
ReplyDelete"For in HIS name shall the Gentiles trust."

ReplyDeleteJudah should not have treated Tamar the was that he did, it was wrong and unfair to her.
ReplyDeleteI read the Bible for spiritual strength and guidance.
"Yet did not the chief butler remember Joseph, but forgat him."
ReplyDeleteI love the parable of the SOWER, it tells us what kinds of Christians are in the world today.
I believe GOD blesses those around me especially when I pray for them.
If I had been given ALL that Joseph was given it would have gone to my head. ReplyDeleteI enjoyed todays Proverb reading. I think as a society we are more concerned about what others will think of us then of trying to please GOD.
ReplyDeleteI have taught thee in the way of wisdom; I have led thee in right paths."
ReplyDeleteI pray when ever I feel the need to pray for others, I have been praying for Haiti on a daily basis and I pray every night before I go to bed.
